What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is a non-directive approach which allows children to communicate in their natural language – play. In our sessions, children who have experienced domestic abuse – directly or indirectly – are provided with a safe space to begin to process their experiences, and express their thoughts and feelings without having to use words.

Gilgal is a domestic abuse charity providing a safe space for women and children who have had to leave their homes due to domestic abuse.

To be eligible to access the outreach play therapy service, we have the following requirements;

The child:

  • Has been exposed to domestic abuse
  • Is no longer living in an abusive/unsafe environment
  • Has settled living arrangements
  • Is not part of an active court case

What does the service look like?

  • 12 one-to-one sessions with Faye, our Certified Play Practitioner
  • Sessions to be held onsite at your school, refuge or other suitable location, in a private space with no interruptions
  • A play therapy kit will be provided, including a sand tray, puppets, art and craft materials, clay, and musical instruments
  • We are currently able to offer sessions in Selly Oak, Kings Heath, Hall Green and Acocks Green.

Hi, I’m Faye, and I’m a certified Therapeutic Play Practitioner and Play Therapist.

I have a dual role; working within a school delivering therapeutic play sessions with children who are struggling in education; and working with the children in Gilgal’s refuge who have experienced domestic abuse.

With 18 years’ experience, I have additionally supported families on child in need plans, children in foster and residential care, and preschool children and their mothers through sensory stay and play sessions.

Beyond the Horizon works across Birmingham and provides Play Therapy and Counselling to children and young people and Therapeutic Parenting courses and Individual Parent Support to parents/carers after bereavement, family breakdown and domestic abuse.

We are working with Beyond the Horizon to ensure that as many children as possible are able to access the therapeutic support they need after experiencing domestic abuse.
